The United States monetary authority lowered borrowing costs on midweek, representing the second reduction this year amid financial volatility originating from the federal government shutdown and tariff policies.
Decision Comes at Extraordinary Moment for Central Bank
The decision to cut the benchmark interest rate by a 0.25% to a span of 3.75% to 4% arrives at an unprecedented juncture for the central bank. The institution has been under immense pressure to lower borrowing costs even with persistent inflation.
Central Bank Announcement Notes Job Market Shifts
In a statement, the Fed said that the unemployment rate had gone up but remains low. “Employment growth have slowed,” the release reads. “Inflation has risen and stays somewhat elevated.”
Government Shutdown Hinders Central Bank’s Task
The ongoing government stoppage, now one of the longest in American history, has also complicated the central bank’s task. Collection of important economic data has been suspended without a timeline as employees at the BLS are on leave during the closure.
Information Shortage Impacts Policy Decisions
The Fed typically analyzes labor statistics to determine labor market conditions, including the number of new jobs created to the market and the present jobless percentage. The last jobs report was released in the beginning of last month, before the closure, and gave a relatively bleak snapshot of the employment scene in August.
The number of jobs created to the market in the summer month was lower by more than 100,000 since the spring, and unemployment crept up to 4.3% – the peak since 2021.
Alternative Reports Indicate Continued Decline
Though BLS was set to release last month’s job market report in early October, it halted its publication once the shutdown started. Private payroll firm ADP indicated earlier this month that the business segment eliminated 32,000 jobs in September, a sign that the job market is continuing to slow.
“Supply as well as demand for labor has fallen significantly,” Fed chair Jerome Powell said recently, a trend he had previously said comes from immigration and tariff policies.
Price Data Shows Gradual Increase
Though BLS’s employment data has been suspended, the agency still released its inflation report for last month that showed that costs are going up, albeit gradually. Costs rose three percent over the past twelve months, the highest since January. In spring, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the minimum it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is 2%.
