Around fifty cars have been marked with what appears to be human blood in the Germany's city of Hanau in proximity to Frankfurt, as reported by law enforcement.
Vehicles, building surfaces and mailboxes were marked, in some cases with swastikas, they reported in a official communication.
Police state they were alerted during the night on Wednesday evening, when a individual discovered that a car in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been covered with a reddish liquid.
The fluid had been placed in the pattern of a banned symbol, they reported.
Law enforcement then found numerous other marked cars and house walls in the adjacent neighborhood.
Swastikas are prohibited in Germany under legislation banning the visible presentation of symbols from the Nazi era.
Law enforcement report early analysis suggest the fluid was most likely blood from a person.
"Currently there is no lead as to its source; officials are presently not aware of any physical harm in relation with the incident," they added.
Local authorities stated they were trying "to resolve the mystery" and have asked to the community for details.
A high-ranking representative commented the incident left him without words and had to be solved quickly.
"This act hits the very heart of Hanau and reawakens the pain of the right-wing violent incident half a decade ago," he stated on social media, recalling the death of nine people by a shooter targeting residents of foreign heritage in February 2020.
